Cargo to Camper Conversion

Emma's Story: Vermont to Alaska

For years, we have taken pride in crafting custom-built aluminum cargo trailers, but often the stars of our story are our customers. They bring their visionary ideas to us, aiming to go beyond the ordinary. With our trailers as their foundation, they often transform these structures into extraordinary works of art. We’re thrilled to begin sharing these stories with you. Starting below, you’ll discover the inspiring journey of Emma, whose father, Dejan, came to us in May of 2020 with a special request: a shell for converting a cargo trailer into a camper. We’ve shared his story many times over the past few years, and now, it’s your turn to hear it directly from him.

Enjoy the read and please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with your own unique vision. While we don’t have the resources to handle every custom request, we look forward to new challenges and tackling out-of-the-ordinary projects.

7x12 Cargo to Camper Conversion 1

The Vision: Why did we choose PROLine?

“This was a Father/Daughter build project during the pandemic, where the goal was to create a mobile home base for a modern wanderer. We were seeking a cargo trailer to do a “travel trailer conversion” on, and wanted to be able to specify window placement, doors, roof height and a few other things. We also wanted to find the lightest and strongest possible fabrication. These requirements ruled out the typical trailer manufacturers, who don’t work directly with consumers, don’t do custom specifications, and who build in steel. We were lucky to find PROLine!”

“To finalize our requirements, we developed our interior layout of the trailer, followed by specific locations for windows and the side access RV door. We also decided that we wanted barn doors in the back of what would be a 7’x12′, which you typically don’t find available with the other manufacturers. We contacted PROLine with our ideas. Aaron got back to us very quickly, and after we shared our floor plan and ideas he was able to generate sketches of the trailer customizations, along with a detailed quote. We had PROLine install three windows, an RV door, rear barn doors, the extra tall (6’6”) inside height, and the contractor roof in our 7×12 V-nose build. We also had them do an “interior delete” option, where the trailer is delivered as an aluminum framed shell, because we were planning to insulate the trailer, and would have had to remove the interior panels anyway. You can also choose from a variety of color options but we decided to keep it somewhat “stealth” and chose the silver/gray color plus the diamond plate nose. Ordering was very easy; they set up your invoice online in their payment system and you can quickly finish the order with your credit card. Our lead time was 8 weeks and PROLine actually beat the delivery date by a week, finishing our build in 7 weeks!”

The Build: Making it All Come Together

“We named the trailer the “MOTH”. (Mobile, Off-grid, Tiny Home). We did a full custom build out of the interior, starting with R14 Foam panel insulation in the walls, R21 in the ceiling and R14 under the floor, followed by Pine T&G wall and ceiling, custom cabinetry, heart pine counters and floors, and decorative tilework to make it cozy. The interior has 6’ 2” standing headroom, a double bed with storage underneath, closet, galley with sink/ propane stove/oven/fridge and Lagun table, propane fireplace, and an enclosed restroom with sink and composting head.”

“On the roof we cut in and installed three Lewmar marine hatches for additional light, and a MaxxAir fan for ventilation. The roof also carries 200 Watts of Renogy rigid solar panels, a WeBoost cellular antenna, and the chimney for the Dickinson propane fireplace. From a systems perspective we have two Whale Gusher marine foot pumps to serve the galley sink and restroom sink, supplied by 50 gallons of water in two tanks. The electrical system has 270 Ah of AGM batteries to supply the 12V DC system, which is managed by a BlueSeas panel and battery main switch. Lighting is LED and there are USB charge ports for cell phones and small devices. We also have a 2000 Watt Xantrex Inverter/Charger, which supplies a separate 120V AC circuit with outlets in various parts of the trailer, and has a 70 Amp charger with external shore-power connection. The 200 Watts of solar are managed by a Victron MPPT controller. Battery monitoring is accomplished with a Renogy battery monitor.”

“The MOTH traveled 25K miles zig zagging all over the country chasing Powder in the Rockies and being a home base for guiding trips, from Rhode Island to Alaska and back, in her first year! After the Alaska trip we brought her back to PROLine, where we upgraded her with a beefier axle, electric brakes, alloy rims with E rated tires, and performed a few other minor maintenance and repair tasks. The MOTH now regularly travels back and forth spending time in Rhode Island and off-grid in Vermont and is awaiting another longer adventure, probably up through Nova Scotia next!
Thank you PROLine!”

The credit here goes entirely to Dejan and Emma. Their request to us were very simple: a strong aluminum framed trailer with windows in specific locations.  With this foundation they crafted beautiful, capable, and comfortable camper. We’re honored to be a part of their journey.
